Safe Drinking Water: The Importance of a Water Filter System

Posted On 05/14/2020 By iSpring Water Systems

Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, and India produced many of humanity's greatest achievements. These civilizations served as the cradle for discoveries and innovations that still benefit us today. They created outstanding contributions to literature, science, law, and mathematics that continue to serve us. All of these civilizations were able to prosper due to the gifts that the rivers they were founded near were able to give them. The water from the Tigris and Euphrates, the Yellow River, Nile, and the Ganges all provided them with the means to grow into powerful societies.

Clean water allows your body to function and heal. Water washes down the ill-effects of any harmful substances that you might consume. Drinking clean water increases your metabolism and decreases stress and fatigue, healing the cells of your body. Drinking fresh water can lower your cholesterol and balance out your body’s alcohol level.

Despite its vital role in maintaining society, access to safe drinking water is becoming a challenge. The threat of pollution and sanitary carelessness has led to water scarcity. Thankfully new technologies and product innovations have made affordable and safe drinking water available to you.

Filtration Methods

To ensure your access to safe, potable water, you can always rely on filtration devices. Here are some popular water filtration methods in the market.

  • 1. Reverse Osmosis

  • Reverse osmosis (RO) is one of the most commonly used and thorough ways to purify drinking water. Most purified water sold in the market is filtered with this technology. According to the CDC, "Reverse Osmosis Systems have a very high effectiveness in removing protozoa (for example, Cryptosporidium, Giardia), bacteria (for example, Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli), and viruses (for example, Enteric, Hepatitis A, Norovirus, Rotavirus." It will also "remove common chemical contaminants (metal ions, aqueous salts), including sodium, chloride, copper, chromium, and lead." Because the critical membrane filter of a RO system removes not only harmful pollutants but also a few helpful minerals, a standard 5 stage RO system will produce slightly acidic water with a pH of 7.0 or below. Some RO systems remedy this by offering an extra alkaline remineralization filter that restores healthy minerals and provides a balanced PH. This will give your water a more natural taste than the regular 5 stage RO water filters will.

  • 2. Activated carbon filters

  • Filters that contain activated carbon work like a charm when it comes to removing arsenic, chlorine, nitrates, and fluorides from your water. This filter will ensure quality water without any weird smells or odors. Activated carbon filters usually come as either granular activated carbon (GAC) or carbon block. A carbon block filter has a brick-shaped container that contains thousands of tiny carbon particles. This feature allows the carbon block filter to hold more dirt and contaminants from the source water than a GAC filter can.

  • 3. Water Distillation

  • Water distillation is one of the initial processes of water filtration. It uses evaporation and condensation as its main processes. This method can get rid of the contaminants like heavy metals and microorganisms that have higher evaporation points than water does. However, water distillation cannot remove chlorine due to its volatile nature.

  • 4. Water Deionization

  • Water deionization is a convenient way to make highly purified water with zero TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). The filtered water is ideal for use in spotless cleaning, aquariums, laboratories, dental/medical care facilities, or anywhere else ultrapure water may be required. However, we don't recommend drinking deionized water.

Water drives away the threat of sickness and serves as your first line of defense from bacteria.
