Stop Drinking Fecal Soup: How Water Pollution Affects Your Drinking Water

Tyson Foods, one of the largest meat processing companies in the U.S., discharged approximately 371 million pounds of pollutants into U.S. waterways. These contaminants were released through 87 billion gallons of wastewater from 41 processing plants across 17 states, contaminating rivers, lakes, and streams. 

Among these pollutants were nitrogen, phosphorus, oil, grease, and cyanide, each of which can profoundly impact aquatic life. Nitrogen and phosphorus fuel algal blooms and lead to hypoxic zones, or "dead zones," where marine life cannot survive. Oil and grease can also create an environment that makes it impossible for fish and other aquatic organisms to live by suffocating them, and cyanide can also kill marine life, even at low concentrations. 

These contaminants not only contributed to the degradation of aquatic ecosystems and posed risks to wildlife but also threatened human health by contaminating drinking water sources. When consumed regularly, these contaminants can lead to health risks because of the exposure to toxic pollutants and carcinogens.
