The Hidden Cost of Hard Water Damage

Hard water conditions are easily identified by the white, chalky buildup on sinks and faucets. This white residue is commonly referred to as scale. Scale buildup and scale deposits can destroy your appliances, your plumbing, and are incredibly harsh on your skin and hair. While this water is safe to drink the amount of damage it can do to your home makes it a major problem.

Hidden Disaster

Scale buildup restricts the amount of water flowing through your pipes and corrodes your appliances. According to research by the Water Quality Association, hard water can reduce the life of your appliances by nearly half! The average lifespan of a washing machine is 11 years, but with unfiltered hard water, your washing machine will likely need to be replaced every seven and a half years. The lifespan of a toilet goes from six and a half years to only two!

This calcium and magnesium present in hard water can also reduce the effectiveness of your appliances. Soap is made less effective by the mineral content of the water and it will be harder to get your dishes and clothing clean. Your clothes will come out feeling stiff and scratchy with faded colors. Dishes will have water spots and a filmy residue.

The Corrosion is Reversible

Some of the hard water filters of iSpring, like WDS150K & WSP-50SL, not only stop the buildup of scale but can work to actively reverse the scale buildup. The same chemical reaction that prevents scale buildups in your pipes and appliances occurs throughout your water to slowly reverse buildup.

Solutions to Hard Water Troubles

There are several options available to treat hard water. The most common approach is to use a traditional water softener system like the iSpring WCS45KG.

The iSpring WCS45KG uses salt to soften your water but the system is designed to calculate an economical and effective soft water treatment plan based on the water source and water volume. This system also uses an automatic backwash and media regeneration feature to extend the life span of the resin and improve the system’s performance without the hassle of manual cleaning.

While like all water softener systems this one requires a bit of maintenance to check that the proper amount of salt is in the system, the WCS45KG is one of the most efficient and easy to maintain water softeners on the market today.

If your diet is salt restrictive or you just aren’t interested in maintaining a traditional water softener system, there are alternatives to deal with the hard water issue.

The iSpring WDS150K anti-scale filter uses a patented scale prohibitor to effectively sequester calcium and magnesium. The filter media of WDS150K is NSF listed under both Standard 60 and Standard 42. It is fully compliant with USA and European standards for food contact materials. The silicon this filter uses effectively protects pipes from bio-growth and corrosion by creating a coating on the inside of pipes. The coating also helps to stabilize any chlorine in your water from reacting to metal plumbing pipes.

The iSpring WSP-50SL is a spin-down filter that prevents scale and corrosion while also protecting from sediment, rust, dirt, sand, and large particles getting into the rest of your filtration system. This system treats hard water using silicon, like the iSpring WDS150K, however, it has the added benefit of filtering out large sediment. This filter is slightly smaller than the WDS150K and works better in smaller homes.

The iSpring ED2000 is an Electronic Descaler that uses an electromagnetic wave to break down the particles and keep them from sticking to your appliances. Because this system does not use filter cartridges, chemicals, or salt it requires no maintenance after set up. This system is also the easiest way to deal with hard water issues among all these systems, requiring no plumbing or drilling.

Keep in mind that these water softeners do not disinfect water. If you have concerns about the quality of your water content, you should add additional ultra-violet (UV) filters to disinfect and protect you.
