The Necessity of a Spin-Down Sediment Filter

Posted On 10/15/2024 By iSpring Water Systems

Purchasing a whole-house water filtration system is the first step in the right direction for enjoying purified water in your home. However, one crucial component in a complete whole-house system that is oftentimes overlooked is a spin-down sediment filter. Not only does this filter remove large particles such as dirt, debris, and sand from your water, but it adds a layer of protection to your whole-house filtration system, your water-based home appliances, and your plumbing system by capturing these large particles, preventing them from clogging filters and pipes.

The function of a spin-down sediment filter is simple and uses zero chemicals or treatment. To remove impurities, the spin-down filter spins at high speeds as water moves through it, causing sediment and debris to be pushed outside of the housing and to settle at the bottom, ultimately separating it from the water that continues.

As mentioned, this increases the productivity and longevity of all water-based appliances as well as other filtration systems and your home's pipes, making them beneficial for any home and highly encouraged for those with well water.

Each sediment filter varies slightly and addresses separate concerns. They can also be customized with their micron size. Though the standard size for a sediment filter is 50 microns, many customers with larger particles in their water prefer a larger micron screen to prevent clogging. However, if a larger micron screen is necessary, it is suggested to use a smaller sediment filter following the larger one to ensure all impurities are being removed and you are getting the highest quality water possible.

iSpring’s spin-down Sediment Filters

Our standard, sediment filter that suits the needs of customers with minimal concerns about sediment contamination is our WSP Series Whole House spin-down Sediment Water Filter. Like all sediment filters, our WSP Series serves as the frontline of defense when it comes to unwanted impurities such as dust, rust, dirt, sand, sediment, and large particles in your water and

  1. removes up to 99% of these contaminants.
  2. extracts large particles, allowing downstream filters to work more efficiently and to prolong the lifespan of their filters.
  3. with regular flushing, is able to consistently perform at top-notch for up to two years before a replacement screen is needed.

Two of our filters that are designed for more complex, well water situations and can handle more demanding water conditions are our WSPARJ-BP and our WSPSL-ARJ-BP. Like the WSP series, these prefilters are rated at 50 microns, although additional sizes are available to suit customers' needs. Each removes up to 99% of large particles and sediments to protect your appliances and pipes as well as terminal equipment. Additionally, this filter

  1. boasts a 110 oz capacity, 22 times that of a traditional filter.
  2. has a maximum flow rate of 25 gallons per minute.
  3. comes equipped with a built-in auto-flushing module featuring dual power supply options simplifying routine maintenance.
  4. provides four different operation modes, including filtration mode, shut-off mode, bypass mode, and backwash mode.

Our WSPSL-ARJ-BP boasts all of the same features as the WSPARJ-BP. However, it also includes Siliphos to help prevent scale and stop corrosion, greatly extending the life of your plumbing fixtures. This filter

  1. provides 4 different operation modes, including filtration mode, shut-off mode, bypass mode, and backwash mode.
  2. features a bypass valve design that can control the water in different channels, making maintenance effortless.
  3. is also designed specifically for more complex well water and, like the WSPARJ-BP has the larger capacity to provide customers with a superior flow rate.

The backwashing feature in the two latter models works to reverse the water flow, which is more effective than regular flushing at dislodging and expelling sediment trapped in the filter mesh, resulting in less frequent manual cleaning and filter replacements. Each of our spin-down filters are reusable and are easy to install and maintain. Because they’re so user-friendly, determining which sediment filter is the best fit for your specific needs will likely be the most difficult part.
